SCHMIDT WINS AGAIN! |
Roseville, CA - (May 1, 2010) - No. 05 Late Model driver Eric Schmidt was unstoppable this past Saturday night in Roseville winning his third race in a row. He qualified on the pole with a 13.842 lap. There was an invert of five which put No. 61 Shannon Mansch on the pole, and No. 44 Ron Chunn on the outside of row one.
Chunn followed leader Mansch around the first lap, then Chunn got in to the rear of Mansch between turns three and four getting Mansch sideways. On the next lap Mansch got in to Chunn coming out of turn two and they both spun, sending them both to the rear. Mansch exited the track for good on lap 11.
No. 17 Jonathan Mawhinney led laps two through 13 then Schmidt took over the lead. Schmidt, Mawhinney and No. 12 Tim Smith raced close for a while, then Schmidt roared ahead and it was an all Schmidt show after that. Mawhinney ended up a half lap or more behind Schmidt. Schmidt lapped the field and then some. No. 46 Zane Lovelace Jr. and No. 35 Matt Scott had a great battle going during the race. Scott ended up finishing fourth. When all was said and done, only Schmidt, Mawhinney and Smith were on the lead lap.
"I had a good crew and a good car and a lot of effort was put in to winning this race," Schmidt said. "We can't afford to run every week, so when we run, we want to run good. The car was great. My car was easy to drive tonight," he added.
Schmidt went on to say that he's owes his win to his crew and crew chief Eric Snider. "He's the brains behind this team. I just have to turn the steering wheel. It was a great night."
In the Modified race No. 24 Scott Winters seemed unbeatable. No. 7 Nik Romano started from the pole with No. 50 Gary Glenn on the outside. At the green flag Glenn led the field. On lap two, No. 15 Jason Philpot took over the lead and ran away by five car lengths. Glen stole the lead back on lap six. Glenn and Winters put on a great show racing side-by-side for a number of laps. A caution flew after Romano checked up and the No. 43 of Nick Lyons spun. Philpot led lap 14, then Winters took took over and pulled away from the field. Winters took the checkered flag followed by Philpot, Ostrowski, Glenn and the No. 21 of Josh Brock came in fifth.
It was Winters second win of the season. "The car was strong, we just had to be patient," Winters said. "The 15 car has been really strong this year and he got out front tonight. I knew we had a fast car, so we just needed to take our time and let the laps click off and look for a shot to pass him, and we did."
Winters also said he's got a great team that worked really hard over the past week to get the car dialed in. Winters finished third last week and said he needed a little bit more to beat the No. 15 car this week and that they found what they needed. "We've got two wins, a second and a third. So far, we are starting out with a good record," he said.
Chris Paulson, driving the No. 3 Jim McGinnis owned car won the Bomber main event after starting fourth.
No. 05 Jill Schmidt started on the pole, with No. 23 Eric Bocksberger on the outside of row one. Bocksberger took the lead on lap one, with Schmidt falling to second and Paulson in third. The top three cars then raced nose to tail. A red flag came out on lap 26 after Schmidt lost a tire on the backstretch and oil started leaking from the No. 12 car of Denise Lambert.
On the restart Bocksberger tried to pass Paulson between turns three and four, but got loose and Paulson retained the lead to take the checkered flag. Bocksberger finished second, the No. 50 Richard Perez owned car being driven by Rick Anable came in third, No. 37 David Thompson was fourth, and No. 15 Kenny Beaumont rounded out the top five.
"The race was great," Paulson said. "Everybody drove a clean race. It was a pretty good night for us. I haven't won in a long time, so it was really great to win."
The No. 33 of Robbie Roy got the victory in Baby Grand racing. No. 6 Jarret Kelly started from the pole with Roy on the outside. Jarret led lap one followed by Roy. On lap four Roy passed Jarret for the lead and maintained it for the win. Kelly came in second, No. 46 Michael Ray third, No. 20 William Camara fourth and No. 07 Patrick Hill was fifth. It is Roy's first win in a Baby Grand.
"It was a fun race," Roy said. "The car started overheating towards the end, but we were able to hold on and win. The competition was really great tonight."
In the 20 lap Mini-Cup main event, Lincoln's No. 24 Danny Allen was on the pole and No. 33 Tommy McCarthy started from the outside. Allen took the lead at the green flag and led the field around the track. He was followed by McCarthy, No. 03 Bryce Napier, No. 33 Adrian Wilson, and No. 10 Kyle Winninger. The top five drivers held their positions until the checkered flag flew.
After his win Allen said, "It was fun. I want to thank all my sponsors, especially Johnny Walker for this great car." This is Allen's second year racing Mini-Cup, and his fifth year racing overall.
